Vocabulary List Explosion

zhouyi   April 23rd, 2009 5:07p.m.

Hey guys, my review queue exploded overnight, from 200 some to 600 some. I suppose it could be from chunks that went through weeks ago. Just thought I'd mention it.

xiaosanyi   April 23rd, 2009 7:12p.m.

good luck xD

zhouyi   April 24th, 2009 2:05a.m.

Yeah... seems like its just me who has this problem. No complaints, just have to dig out of it 100 characters at a time.

ximeng   April 24th, 2009 2:24a.m.

This morning I woke up with 1000 items in the queue. After 30 minutes practising I took a short break and came back to... 1000 items waiting to review. Is 1000 some kind of soft limit? Or is this just a coincidence.

thinkbuddha   April 24th, 2009 3:10a.m.

I had a similar explosion. Happily going along with 50-150 to review every time I used Skritter (twice a day, usually). Yesterday morning, 100 or so to review. Yesterday afternoon... 850 to review.
This seems odd. Anyway, back work to try and dig myself out.

thinkbuddha   April 24th, 2009 3:17a.m.

Just a thought. Maybe the explosion might be related to the Save Me panic button, which I pressed a few weeks back?

scott   April 24th, 2009 8:09a.m.

The Save Me button should have spread all the things ready to review pretty evenly over whatever span of time you set it to, so I don't think that's the problem.

One possibility is a bug I just fixed involving the Queue. If you used the Add button on the vocab list page to add individual words to the Queue, or used the add word widget to add things to the Queue, then it may have effected you. If you had things in the Queue, and no lists to add from, then the system would just dump everything in you Queue to be studied. It should be fixed now though, but this huge bump may be related? Had you guys been using the Queue much over the last couple weeks or ever seen a huge group of new items come up in a row?

Also Ximeng, yeah going through your vocabulary viewer you have a couple hundred more than 1000 to go right now. Due to server limitations we can't count much higher than that. I'd say the high number probably has more to do with the three days off? If you have a few hundred items each day it will add up, especially after such a long day of review. To keep the numbers under control, the best thing is to be consistent with your daily practice.

And looking at your viewer, zhouyi, I'd say yeah it's a bunch of items that have grouped up, ones that you probably added at about the same time. I'll add some randomness to the scheduling so that hopefully the clusters will spread out a bit more over time. I was actually supposed to put that in before, but I forgot!

ximeng   May 1st, 2009 6:20p.m.

It seems to count higher now, I'm up to 1166. I like the calculating animation as it counts up, think that's new.

scott   May 1st, 2009 8:28p.m.

Yep! Just put that up a couple days ago, so it splits the counting up into smaller chunks so it can count higher numbers more easily.

zhouyi helped me identify some weaknesses in the scheduling system, so I'll be implementing some tweaks in the next few days which should hopefully make these explosions happen less, if at all.

For those who still get them, where old reviews are overwhelming any attempt to study new vocabulary, I suggest using the save me button to push them back a ways, maybe spread them out over a month or two, or possibly deleting older words if you like, then adding them back later. I'd go with the save me button though. You could also go to the vocabulary options page and increase the frequency of adding new words. Hopefully soon you won't have to resort to such hacks though!

ximeng   May 2nd, 2009 9:54a.m.

Actually I'm quite happy working through my old reviews, I think I've got enough that there's plenty of variety coming through.

Just for your info, I clicked on the home page to find how many characters I had, and it paused with the calculating text still showing (actually I think it paused on the right number). So I refreshed and this time it gave the following:

ximeng, you have NaN items ready to review.

Something not quite right there!

scott   May 4th, 2009 11:14p.m.

Well, that works out well ximeng, because the fix looks like it won't affect you! I'm pushing back items which people have never gotten wrong, ie things they already knew before starting with Skritter. As near as I can tell yours ximeng are almost all things you have gotten wrong at one point or another, so they'll stay where they are. But for users like Zach and zhouyi, a great number of the items will be pushed back, and should clear the way for working on newer words.

I imagine some users will find tomorrow morning that they have a lot fewer words to study, and the number of words to review will go up slower day by day. The more you came here knowing, the more you'll be affected by this fix. Let me know if you like the balance better!

I guess tonight some of us will be having a Vocabulary List Implosion.
