Definition of "jiao" (角)

Doug (松俊江)   August 9th, 2009 12:56a.m.

Could someone add to the definition the fact that this is a Chinese unit of currency (alternate name for "mao" (毛))? This is how I learned it and it would make it easier to study.

Thanks!

How's this?

"horn; angle; unit of money (1/10 yuan); corner (Kangxi radical 148), role"

hobofat   August 9th, 2009 4:21p.m.

That looks good, I imagine that many others as well learned this as a unit of money. 1 jiao coins and paper bills are more annoying than pennies, and one seems to collect a million and a half of them in China. Made good souvenirs for annoying cousins though...

I like to collect 10 of them then pay for a bus ride. Soon I'm hoping we will have electronic payment cards, that would be so much more convenient. but then what will I do with the jiao?

o.0 Where are you that you get 1角 bus fare? In Xi'an when I was last there three years ago it was already at 2角 for the cheap fare!

Nicki   August 10th, 2009 7:53p.m.

The bus fare is 1元 (for most places I need to go). That's why I need 10角 to pay for it...

Haikou, Hainan, BTW.

hobofat   August 10th, 2009 8:29p.m.

Ah yes, I said 2角 but I meant 2元!

Doug (松俊江)   August 11th, 2009 1:08a.m.

Thanks Nick - You guys rock!

Nicki   August 11th, 2009 2:46a.m.

Wow, 2元 for the cheapest fare...

Well, I guess there are benefits to living in a medium sizish city with no major tourist attractions!

hobofat   August 16th, 2009 4:18p.m.

Well it definitely wouldn't be the first or last time I've paid a special 老外 fare!

Hobbes828   August 16th, 2009 8:14p.m.

all the big cities i've been to are 2元 for a bus ticket (Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou, Guangzhou, Dongguan)... but I would definitely believe that it would be cheaper places... taxi starting prices have a ridiculous range across China.

Nicki   August 17th, 2009 4:13a.m.

Taxi rides start at 10元 here in 海口.
