which smartphone best suits skritter

jasche   April 21st, 2012 2:50a.m.

I would like to study while commuting, and was wondering what smartphone would be best for that.

I am leaning towards the android galaxy line of products, but coulnt google any convincing materials.

iPhone or any other iOS device if you aren't interested in requiring a data connection the entire time.

However, be aware that the iphone app has not yet been released.

@icebear what does "jailbroken" means? Do I have first hack the ios in order to run skritter?

Would I be able to use skritter on an IPad with WIFI only and go through the flashacards while disconnected from the home network?

icebear   April 22nd, 2012 5:50a.m.

Jailbroken means you install a modified version of the iOS which then allows installation of apps via means besides the AppStore.

It isn't technically difficult to jailbreak most iOS devices, as there are a number of automated tools available that do most of the work for you. There is a need to be very cautious if you aren't too good at reading instructions, however, as some versions of some devices may be permanently modified by the jail breaking process - i.e. it could void your warranty, or give you trouble if you try to revert back to official software in the future, etc. It also breaks some basic functions of the iOS device, for example the Bookstore doesn't function correctly on my device (a common issue, as it requires authentication).

The website below is one of the better ones for instructions. Still, I'd be cautious if you aren't so hot at computers and/or reading instructions very carefully.

@jasche Sorry I didn't address your second question - yes, the iOS app allows exactly that - studying smoothly without the need for a wifi connection (except when syncing progress or adding new words). In theory, if you had added all the words you ever plan to study, you could sync the device once and never again and it would implement the spacing of those words without issue. That (connection free) functioning will work fine with or without jailbreaking.

I use skritter on an HTC Desire HD that I bought about a year ago. I chose this smartphone because it has a nice big screen. The size of the screen does matter. The current solution for smartphones where the skritter practice screen is presented in a different way is certainly not perfect but it has served me well up till now. I use the Beta version because there the buffer is larger than on the normal version (or has this been ported since?). It takes a little bit longer to load but after that I can skritter away with very few problems, even on the train or subway when the connection is slow or broken.

If you haven't already jailbroken your device, do not do so just for the purpose of installing the Skritter app.

The iOS app will be much better than the Android version, and we're getting pretty close to having it ready. So jasche, if you can wait a little while, then iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad will give you the best Skritter experience.

russell359   April 22nd, 2012 12:02p.m.

so there's an Android app in the pipeline? or are you just talking about the online Android interface?

icebear   April 22nd, 2012 12:15p.m.

@russell359 I think he meant the native iOS app performs better than the Flash version running in Android.

russell359   April 22nd, 2012 12:16p.m.

yup, just edited my post to reflect that thought when yours popped up lol

oh well, there's always pleco...

jasche   April 22nd, 2012 12:32p.m.

wow these are a couple of usefull infos.

My understanding taken from somewhere is, is that IOS goes HTML5 while Android does flash. Though android does not preclude HTML5 or does it? I mean, it should be possible to run HTML Apps on Android too?!

Thanks for Your patience
