studying one chapter at a time

amiteven   June 15th, 2012 12:59p.m.

lets say i have added a book to my list... lets say starting from chapter number 8.

after learning that chapter i would like to move on to chapter number 9.

but would like at first to avoid the previous chapter 8 words.

is there an option to focus on chapter 9 words only? without erasing the previous list and starting a new list form chapter 9.

If you go to a section you want to study on its own, click 'study section' in the upper right corner of the section's page. For example here:

http://www.skritter.com/vocab/listsect?list=52209436&sect=1

We recommend against doing so as much as possible, though. Studying all lists with all words at the same time is the most efficient way to review, mixing new and old together. That and the scheduling for single sections is just not as good. It's up to you though!

amiteven   June 15th, 2012 2:55p.m.

thank you for your help

i agree , but as a current student in taiwan, when having a test i would like to do a review of a specific chapter... mixing all the vocabulary together would end up including thousands of words.

btw, how can i do it in the iphone app?

amiteven   June 15th, 2012 5:03p.m.

that's a basic problem....

the words are endless.. you cannot run the algorithm

on hundreds and thousands of words.

i think the idea is great but needs improvements..

there should be couple of option's added to the study

program, with more freedom of controlling the process.

We aim to add single-list study to the app soon--it just didn't make it into 1.0. But we don't have plans to do single-section study in the app, as there are a number of tricky bits about it which we learned the hard way from doing it on the site. Maybe some day we'll get it in there.

amiteven   June 16th, 2012 5:18a.m.

i was happy to find you guys, but i just want to say that studying characters is impossible only in front of a computer since you have to do it in any spare time you've got this is why the app is very important..

One of the most amazing things about skritter is that if a user posts a query like this thread, he gets a response from 2 staff within 24 hours! Amazing!

Hi! Is there a way to do single-list study on the Japanese iPhone app? Thanks!

nick   September 2nd, 2012 9:29p.m.

Hi rebecca417! We haven't had time to get that feature in yet, although it's one of our priorities going forward, since sometimes you just gotta have it. We're looking forward to it, too.

Hi,

I spent some time trying Skritter tonight - there's a lot to like. As others have noted, it would be tremendously helpful to be able to study one section at a time, such as when preparing for a test. That, in combination with being able to study one list at a time (I have one textbook for school and several others I study from on the side, I don't want to study from all at once) would be great. Unfortunately it doesn't look like single-section study will be offered, so for this reason alone I'll have to pass on Skritter.

There is a workaround that allows you to do this in the iOS app- ban all words except for those from your chosen list.

Of course you may want to first make a list of words that you had previously banned.

Hi,

This work around would allow for single list study, but wouldn't necessarily allow for single section study (within a list), no? Unless, perhaps, you export the words from a single section to a new list, then ban all other words? I explored the basics of Skritter last night, but not how to ban words - is it easy to temporarily ban/unban all words (excluding those from a given list)?

I had the though of using the web-based interface on my iPad, but it requires Flash. I wanted to use my iPad, instead of my laptop, because using a) using a stylus on my iPad is preferable to using a mouse, and b) with an iPad, I can see the strokes I've written on the screen, which helps me align/place my next stroke. On a computer, the screen you are looking at is not the writing surface, which makes writing much harder.

Since we soon will have single list study on the IOS app there will be a way around this. Copy the words you have in your section to a new list with only one section and study that in isolation. I do this for my starred words on the web today. I break out some 20 or so and put them in to a list and study only those when ever i feel to concentrate on some specific words. On the web I can also do this by adding them to the scratch pad. This I do not think we will have in the IOS app, at least not soon, but single lists will come. When ever you are done you can either keep the list or delete it. Since you have your original list left your words will still be in your study.

The workaround I mentioned should work fine for a single section, you can ban and unban words from a section fairly easily from both the web and iOS list management interfaces.

OK, I'll give a a try and see how it goes. Thanks for the suggestion.

In regards to the web interface and writing: Mac OS X (and I think Windows too) support the ability to execute mouse button clicks by touch only. As best as I can tell, this does not work with the Skritter web interface, i.e., if you are using a trackpad, you have to click the mouse button (or on a Mac, just click the pad) and hold it down while you write. It would be great if the touch-only mouse button controls could be supported.
