Pleco-new dictionaries.. worth the wait?

Sandeep   August 20th, 2012 2:13a.m.

I heard from mike that many new dictionaries are in the pipeline. Are they worth the wait or should I go ahead and by complete bundle as it exists now? it still lack Oxford dict.. As per him there are quire a lot of great dictionaries on the way. Are the current bunch of dictionaries really fresh enough and comprehensive enough for me to shell out 150$ s?
Really sitting on the fence and deciding whether to wait or to buy the complete bundle right away.

If you ask Mike Love at plecoforums.com, he may let you know what he has planned for upcoming bundles/pricing.

Sandeep   August 20th, 2012 2:35a.m.

He said that there are many new dictionaries worth 400 $ worth of price on the way and some 6 C-C dictionaries.

adamd   August 20th, 2012 2:47a.m.

I have Adso, LDC, Unihan (all from a bundle I bought years ago, I presume) and NWP, and I'm waiting for the new bundle(s) before I buy more. If you can manage with what you have now, it might be worth waiting another few months.

I wouldn't particularly recommend the Complete bundle right now unless you're someone for whom every single dictionary in it would currently be useful (a pretty select group - have to benefit from an HSK-vocab-only C-E learner's dictionary, a C-C dictionary *and* an E-C business terms dictionary...)

However, since we're planning to offer many of the new dictionaries in "dictionary packs" that give you a discount without requiring you to re-purchase stuff you already have like handwriting / document reader / etc, you could consider getting one of the cheaper bundles and then adding on any additional dictionaries you want later.

Freshness-wise, we've got significant updates to both ABCs coming for free (particularly ABC E-C which has now been split into smaller entries for sub-headwords) and much-improved formatting for 21C, so you're certainly not going to be left with disappointingly out-of-date dictionaries in a few months if you buy the Professional bundle now.

(exact counts / prices are very much TBD, there are two very exciting new titles that are going to be uncertain right up until the last minute as we still don't have finished data for them yet)

Mike if you are reading when can one expect send to Skritter from Pleco?
Will it ever happen?
This is the best thing I like about MDBG!

mikelove   August 24th, 2012 4:15p.m.

We are looking at some other ways to share data but I don't believe this is one of the ones we've talked about so far. Given iOS' lack of Flash support this would have to mostly be done on their end, by adding an API for other apps to tell their app to pull up the stroke order for a particular character, and that might be a lot of work depending on how their app is designed. (at the very least probably not something they want to think about until they've got Japanese and iPad / iPhone 5 / iPad Mini support done)

Skritter team.. Inputs?

nick   August 25th, 2012 11:42p.m.

Hmm; we can think about it. Doesn't seem to be a killer feature though, like looking up a Skritter word in Pleco or adding Pleco words/lists to Skritter vocab.

Alan   August 26th, 2012 12:42a.m.

Personally a quicker way of adding new words to my own lists would be useful, like one click away from the main screen. I have to go quite a few screens deep (waiting for network queries at each step). As a result I pretty much do all the list adding/manipulation on the web, not in the app.

@Mike is the tuttle learner's getting updated soon?
how soon?

mikelove   August 29th, 2012 3:54a.m.

Tuttle Learner's should be in the big update, but we're still not sure when that'll be. We're considering releasing a couple of the new dictionaries ASAP for our current app so that we can get a bunch of impatient publishers / customers to stop bugging us while we finish up the update, but it wouldn't be one of those.

Sandeep   August 29th, 2012 4:39a.m.

what is the new dictionary i iOS6? Guifan's new version ?
Will then Pleco not get it?Will it be just a pop up dictionary or can one see all the entries of the dictionary as one can see in PLECO?

mikelove   August 29th, 2012 3:45p.m.

Can't talk about that specifically since the iOS 6 beta is under NDA, but I can say that a) Apple licensed Guifan in Mac OS 10.8, b) The fact that they licensed it doesn't necessarily mean we won't (the relevant person at FLTRP is away all summer but when they get back we'll be renewing our discussions on it), c) We've got other nice general-purpose C-C dictionaries in the pipeline too, and d) iOS' built-in dictionary in general is only a popup and that seems to be all they intend it to be, so it's not likely to pose much competition for us.

Thanks for the inputs.
