I've come across a few characters that are weren't simplified but look as if they should have been. In other words they look very similar to other traditional characters that were simplified.

1. 篝

冓 is used in quite a few traditional characters (講, 溝 and 購 spring to mind, all of which were simplified), but 篝 is still in use on the mainland.

2.躞, 燮

The way the 火s and the 言 are arranged here makes it look like a traditional character to me. Similar to the top parts of both 勞 and 變

3. 爨

The top of this character is very similar to 興

4. 焉

I'm not sure if the bottom of this character is a 火 or not but even so it looks to me that it should have been simplified in the same way that the bottom part of 馬 was changed to 马.

5. 霓

this has an 兒 which was simplified to 儿.

OK, I admit these are not exactly common characters, but even still...

Does anyone else know any other examples of this?

Did you just find out that simplified characters are inconsistent ?

I started learning traditional a couple of months ago I guess so I guess that might be related to it.

I wouldn't agree that they are inconsistent though. For the most part they are (remember that a lot of them were taken from actual usage so it's not surprising), but there seem to be a few glaring ones that seem to just stick out like a sore thumb.

I see your point about 灌 , 罐, but there are quite a few simplified characters that use that element so I don't think it's rare enough to be applicable compared with the examples i have given (the ones you gave plus 獾 鹳 and maybe another one that I cant think of right now). I agree that how they dealt with this element was inconsistent, but it's not exactly what I meant...

I guess what I mean is that you learn a new character and you think you have accidentally learn t the traditional version instead of the simplified one...ok i remember when I first learned 罐 I had that feeling, but also for 襄 and 嚢, but that's more just because they have a lot of strokes that anything else.

馨 also maybe. but if 聲 is simplified to 声 then that would be impossible for 馨 (which is kinda inconsistent).

It's less about simply number of strokes or inconsistency though and more that the in some of the ones I gave part of the character has a part that is only used in traditional characters so it really looks unsimplified. If there are really 80,000+ characters then there should be a ton...:S
