New Skritter Update (2.6.0) on iOS8 very slow

adammalpass   October 1st, 2014 12:31a.m.

Hi,

I just updated to Skritter 2.6.0. In the description it says the graphics engine has been much improved, but actually it's the opposite. It used to be fine with no lag, but now it is very slow and jagged when moving onto the next character. Does anyone else have this problem, and/or know how to fix it?

Thanks,

Adam

P.S: I'm using iPhone 5S, iOS 8.0.2

nick   October 1st, 2014 1:39a.m.

Is it just slow for you when moving to the next character, or also when writing, or always? (I have the 5S also and so far haven't been able to reproduce the problem, so if you can help describe it in more detail, I can work on it.)

It's even worse   October 1st, 2014 1:53a.m.

I don't see ANY characters anymore. iOS 8 on iPad 3. How do I revert this update?

Rudy   October 1st, 2014 3:06a.m.

The same, I dont see characters on definition since the update, neither the definition.

Graphics got worse, the movements are not fluent anymore. Is it possible to reverse the upgrade? iPad mini IOS8.02

adammalpass   October 1st, 2014 5:06a.m.

Hi Nick, thanks for the quick response. I just see the problem when moving on to the next character. I'm not testing writing at the moment, so can't confirm if that is failing or not, although it seems others have this issue.

adammalpass   October 1st, 2014 5:07a.m.

P.S: At least as a temporary fix, is there some way to 'downgrade' the update to the previous version?

Mazer80   October 1st, 2014 6:39a.m.

Same here. Problems on iOS8.0.2, sometimes I just don't see the character nor definition. I only see the text "What's the pinyin?". For example for the Kangxi radical 167, jin - gold;metal;money.

It seems to be certain characters. I closed the app entirely and started up, other characters are fine, but jin I can't see. If you need a screenshot, let me know, I can e-mail it.

iOS 8.0, iPhone 6
It is a bit slower when "turning the page" to the next character, but not much, and I think writing is a little bit slower as well. Other than that, everything is there.

If you want to downgrade to the previous update while this is being sorted out, this worked for me (on an iPhone 4) - but it will only work if:

- you have NOT synced your phone with iTunes since the update was downloaded to your iPhone
- and you have NOT set iTunes on your computer to automatically download app updates

If you have done either of those things, then I assume you will have to wait for Apple to approve the corrected update mentioned on some of the threads about this issue - indeed, if they are going to approve it soon, it might not be worth going through all these steps anyway.

You would of course be doing this at your own risk - just because it worked for me, it might not work for you.

1) make sure Skritter on your iPhone sync'd to the web version of Skritter the last time you used it so that your data on the web version is up to date and make sure you know your Skritter user name and password for use in step 10) below

2) delete Skritter on your iPhone (it'll warn that this will delete all your Skritter data too, hence the need to make sure you have done step 1) above) - if this sounds too scary to you, stop here! :-)

3) in order to ensure that the app doesn't re-update to the buggy version when you have gone through all the steps below, turn off auto-updating of apps on your iPhone (in Settings, scroll down to iTunes & App Store, tap that then scroll down to "AUTOMATIC DOWNLOADS" and turn "Updates" to "off")

4) connect your iPhone to your computer and sync with iTunes

5) in iTunes: View / Show Sidebar (if the Sidebar isn't already showing)

6) click on your iPhone in the sidebar then click on the Apps tab at the near the top centre of the screen

7) find Skritter in your Apps list there and drag it to the screen on your iPhone that you want it to appear on (presumably the screen you deleted it from in step 2) above)

8) click away from the Apps area and it should ask if you want to update (I can't remember the exact wording of the prompt but it should be obvious) - say yes and it will begin another sync which should end up with the previous version of Skritter back on your phone

9) once it has finished re-loading, open Skritter on your iPhone again and select the option to log in to an existing account

10) enter your user name and password, tap ok (or whatever the button is called) and it should start to sync with your web version - this may take a few minutes, since it has to sync from scratch - and it will probably put up a worrying message about your account having been nuked on your iPhone and needing to grab more data before you can continue, but as long as your data is still on the web version, everything should be ok in the end

Having done all that, Skritter on my iPhone worked fine again. As I said though, you would be doing this at your own risk and do consider whether it is really worth doing all this instead of just waiting for Apple to approve the corrected update.

eulertj   October 1st, 2014 9:30a.m.

Slower in every ways. Worse stroke graphic. No charectors shown in the 'flash card' sections.

Ipad3. ios7

notfromhere   October 1st, 2014 2:52p.m.

I found it slow as well on IOS7 on a iPhone 5S. When drawing strokes, there seems to be a noticeable lag between drawing and it appearing on screen.

baumkuchen5000   October 1st, 2014 10:16p.m.

I have an iPhone 4 running on iOS 7.1.2 and the characters in the "what's the definition?" Don't show anymore.

I also have an iPad mini retina running on ios 8.0.2 And the animations for drawing strokes are not fluent anymore ( this hasn't changed on the iPhone 4)

jr0026   October 2nd, 2014 4:26p.m.

Mine is slow for everything. I have a 5th generation Ipod Touch with the latest iOS, and the graphics are choppy both when the stroke itself appears and when moving to the next screen.

JieWen   October 2nd, 2014 6:48p.m.

Mine is also slow

snowcreature99   October 3rd, 2014 2:07a.m.

I have two devices on iOS 8.02 with about the same CPU power:
iPad Air running Skritter 2.5.0
iPhone 5S running Skritter 2.6.0

2.6.0 seems jerky with two animations - when shrinking a character down to the upper left after finishing writing it, as well as when sliding characters on- or off-screen when switching between words or between characters of compounds.

In both those cases the animation is very smooth on 2.5.0 and jerky on 2.6.0. The sensation is like 2.5.0 draws 30 frames to do the animation and 2.5.0 draws 5.

I don't see any difference in writing raw squigs, or in how each individual stroke renders and shifts into position when writing. For both of those, both versions seem exactly the same to me.

Running both versions side by side simultaneously, it takes exactly the same amount of time for these actions to happen on both versions - so it's not like 2.6.0 is trying to move things too fast or anything. The only difference I can see is the smoothness of those two animations.

sdstefan   October 3rd, 2014 9:23a.m.

I am using a iPad 2 with iOS 8.0.2 and this 2.6.0 Skritter. The animation is extremely jerky, and the page turning is as well. The pen stroke is also thinner, and is not as fun and pretty as the last version. Also, for the first time, Skritter shuts down my music playing apps (my music, spotify, pandora) when I open it. This has never happened before! Being able to Skritter and listen to music on the same device is what makes it so great. Very disappointed with this update.

parapara   October 4th, 2014 9:11p.m.

Hey! iPhone 6 here, just switched over to this new phone today and it updated all my apps without me asking! The new update for skritter is SLOW. Slow writing, slow to turn cards and animations also laggy. I originally thought it may be an iPhone 6 thing but it appears others are having this problem on other devices as well after updating. Anyway, still useable...

Byzanti   October 5th, 2014 4:21a.m.

I haven't come across any glitches, but the writing (raw squigs) and transitions are a little laggier on my iPad Air. I didn't feel like it was a big deal.

mjv   October 5th, 2014 12:37p.m.

iPad 3, iOS 7, Skritter 2.6.0, raw squigs. In addition to the missing characters bug that Skritter 2.6.1 is expected to fix, I also notice choppier animations when drawing squigs, when finishing a character (as the model character's strokes shift into position), and when moving to the next character in a word (as the current character shrinks).

Daniel yoder   October 6th, 2014 11:42a.m.

I'm also having severe frame rate issues in iPad Air

LazyAzinPanda   October 6th, 2014 9:04p.m.

I've been having the same problems. I just updated my iPhone 5s to IOS 8.0.2 and then all my apps updated to automatically to their respective IOS 8 versions. Skritter was among these and now the previously smooth and fluid animations are laggy and have a noticeable frame rate. However as mentioned above, the length of actions (drawing, going to the next character and so on ) isn't affected, just the animations. The app is still usable, it's just slightly annoying.

However my big complaint is that I can no longer play music in the background while I use skritter. iTunes radio, stored music and youtube all stop playing as soon as I open Skritter. Even trying to start music from within the Skritter app using the control panel doesn't work. I can play music as long as I have the control panel open, but once I close it, the music stops.

So please in the next update re-enable background music functionality.

Optii   October 16th, 2014 12:30p.m.

Hi everyone.

Nick hope your still as awesome as always, great job you doing.

This is my first time visiting the forums. I been having this slow animations issue on my iPhone 5s and now it came to my iPad air when it updated. I noticed something wrong right away after both updates. It's lagging both when writing and when it's sliding.

Thanks again for an awesome product.

Zahra   October 23rd, 2014 9:37a.m.

Can someone tell me why I can no longer use iTunes as the same time as skritter on my iPhone? I really like listening to music while studying characters, thanks!

ximeng   October 23rd, 2014 11:57a.m.

Hi Zahra / LazyAzinPanda, did you see this thread re: music:

http://www.skritter.com/forum/topic?id=2686193571&comments=2

Zahra   October 26th, 2014 2:05a.m.

Ah, thank you very much!

tausha   November 2nd, 2014 6:14a.m.

So... any word on the speed issue? Found the bug yet?

podster   November 2nd, 2014 6:04p.m.

tausha, the current version is 2.6.2, so I guess this thread should be moot by now, since its title is in reference to 2.6.0. If you are still having a problem you might want to open a new conversation.

tausha   November 2nd, 2014 7:22p.m.

Well, yes, I could have. But since 2.6.1 was basically only the fix for the missing characters and 2.6.2 the change of the mute switch behaviour I felt my question about this bug belonged to the version that introduced it in the first place, which was 2.6.0. You might disagree on that but that's how I roll ;)
I'm sure one of the Skritter guys will read this in any case.

nick   November 2nd, 2014 10:24p.m.

We have been having a hard time figuring this one out. On all the devices we have access to, including some of the same models y'all are reporting are slow, it's fast. Profiling it hasn't turned anything up. So we're a bit at a loss, unless it's some specific configuration of options we are missing that is making it slow. Have you tried switching on/off various app options to see if it makes any difference on your device? That might help us track it down.
