serious syncing problems

learninglife   June 4th, 2013 11:08a.m.

its 11 p.m. in beijing and I am confronted with a syncing problem.

just did 15 skrittering and when i came back from the forum it says 4 minutes done...

ipad wont sync.

the iphone app however seems to sync just fine.

please help!

Schnabelhund   June 4th, 2013 11:36a.m.

I don't know if it's related, but it seems that the progress isn't being saved on the web version right now.

fa   June 4th, 2013 11:59a.m.

Same problem here :(
The iPad version seems to be stuck at the 'startup sync' screen and the web version won't save any progress.

EmceeInPRC   June 4th, 2013 12:08p.m.

I'm here in the US and am also having issues. Did an hour of skrittering on the website a few hours ago, and now neither iPad or iPhone will sync. Both get stuck on the "Sync: Counting" alert, though oddly there is a tiny circle shown rather than the typical pie-chart being filled up...

north   June 4th, 2013 12:09p.m.

Same issue online for me :(

InkCube   June 4th, 2013 12:26p.m.

Same issue on the web version.

eurowatz   June 4th, 2013 1:33p.m.

same for me and girlfriend in beijing. both lost about 30min of progress. words studied 2 hrs ago show up as last seen ex. 7 weeks ago... :-(

junglegirl   June 4th, 2013 1:39p.m.

I am also stuck on the "Sync: Counting" alert on my iPod Touch. It counts to 4 and then won't go any further.

learninglife   June 4th, 2013 2:06p.m.

been doing one hour and a half on my iphone and its working ok.

Schnabelhund   June 4th, 2013 2:17p.m.

Still not working here.

Bohan   June 4th, 2013 2:20p.m.

yeah, app isn't syncing and web version isn't saving progress

scott   June 4th, 2013 2:27p.m.

I've taken a look and it appears our task queues, which do various long-running jobs like saving changes from iOS and the site, or compiling large sync files for sending to iOS, aren't running fast enough (or at all). Rest assured your changes and studies are there and have not been lost, they just haven't been processed yet. We're looking into it, but my initial guess is there's a slow down on our host's end for some reason, and will be resolved soon.

Jay Andrew Allen   June 4th, 2013 2:32p.m.

Good to hear this wasn't just me. :-|

Thanks for the update, Scott, and keep us posted.

learninglife   June 4th, 2013 2:58p.m.

thanks for the fast feedback.

done my two hours on the iphone for today.
time for bed now.

Schnabelhund   June 4th, 2013 3:31p.m.

When can we expect this problem to be fixed? It kept me from studying the past four hours and I'd like to get at least some of the reviews done today.

nick   June 4th, 2013 3:39p.m.

We're still working on it--App Engine is not being very responsive to our task queue commands. Should have something soon.

rlaw   June 4th, 2013 5:16p.m.

Same issue here on ipad. Tried reloading app, clearing local data, didn't work.

夏普本   June 4th, 2013 5:38p.m.

Still not working for me. Ipad won't since at all and on iPhone doesn't seems to keep asking the same characters every time I open the app.

scott   June 4th, 2013 5:59p.m.

Still working on it. The iOS related queues appear to be better, so syncing should be working. We did have to purge the total and other large syncs from the server to iOS, but they will time out after a few minutes and start again and finish. We did turn off the tasks for checking the consistency of your iOS data since it's not crucial and it was taking up a good portion of that queue's time.

The general tasks for the site are still catching up. We're about an hour behind now, so any studying from this morning should be showing up. Assuming things continue to go well we should be all caught up soon.

scott   June 4th, 2013 6:08p.m.

We're caught up now. Let us know if you're still seeing issues. We'll keep an eye on things for a bit and do our best to keep the queues from misbehaving again.

If you couldn't study due to this downtime, let us know through the contact form below and Evan or Jeremy will credit you for lost time.

Thanks for your patience guys!

Schnabelhund   June 4th, 2013 10:22p.m.

It's still not working here.

Schnabelhund   June 4th, 2013 10:29p.m.

The number has gone down now.

lmm   June 4th, 2013 10:52p.m.

I still have a "left over" sync issue. I've done 1:46:15 on my iPhone, but my web interface progress bar only has 1.23 hours. (I am also assuming that the stats are also missing about half an hour of work.)

itaju   June 5th, 2013 2:07a.m.

still issues here!

Rene van den Boomen   June 5th, 2013 2:35a.m.

Solved for me!!

ddapore99(I'm_me)   June 9th, 2013 7:55p.m.

I can't log in.

Schnabelhund   June 10th, 2013 6:30p.m.

I hate to tell ya this, but it's back.

zhangyanglu   June 12th, 2013 10:05a.m.

Still not solved, and no status update? ;-/

Nick, Scott?

ddapore99   June 13th, 2013 6:37a.m.

I can finally log in but I get a mismatch on everything when I compare my iPod to the server. I deleted and installed Skritter again but it didn't fix the problem.

nick   June 13th, 2013 12:04p.m.

We have recently turned off the sync match checker feature after it was contributing to the bad task queue backup problems mentioned above, so it will currently always report mismatches for everything even when you're totally matched up, because the server isn't counting any more.

Since the feature never worked very well in the first place and took a ton of compute cycles, the app build which is awaiting App Store review now (and has the example sentences) has the "Compare with Server" feature turned off, too.

nick   June 13th, 2013 12:08p.m.

zhangyanglu, I've taken a look and I'm not sure, but I think you might need the updated iOS app waiting for review to fix the issues and let you log in. With any luck, it should be available sometime in the next eight business days.

zhangyanglu   June 13th, 2013 12:08p.m.

So there is no chance anymore to see if we are synced properly, is that right?

I wonder because if you remember, I was still one of the people who had different sync statuses when working on iphone / ipad at the same time, not talking about just "mismatch" info but also wrong amount of reviews pending and time spent. Since it never got fixed completely I just stopped using ipad version or if I saw there was a mismatch, at least I could delete the whole account on one device and reset it).

If we lose this option, how do we know if things are working or not? :-/

nick   June 13th, 2013 12:56p.m.

The number-of-reviews-due difference is a much better indicator than the sync mismatch report, so I would just go by that.

bobbyd   June 14th, 2013 3:43a.m.

I nuked my list a couple hours ago and started a new one, but it hasn't synced to my iPhone... Is this part of the same problem?

nick   June 14th, 2013 1:03p.m.

Which list is this? If you haven't seen the sync go through, you might want to Clear Local Data in your account settings to get the freshest sync.

bobbyd   June 15th, 2013 12:42a.m.

Fixed! Thanks Nick!
