Rating oneself // How strict are you?

Unprovincial   October 31st, 2013 7:34a.m.

Assuming Skritter prompts to write a two-character word and you only get provided the English meaning. You don't know the word and click to reveal the Chinese pinyin and then you instantly know how to write it. How would you rate yourself?

Assuming you get a Chinese character and know the exact pronunciation but not the (exact) English meaning. How would you rate yourself?

Usually wrong, unless it was a case of mixing up a synonym. I treat this as both a writing test AND English to Chinese test.

I am similar in this regard. If I don't instantly, or almost instantly know how to write it based on the English clue, I count it wrong, except in the case of a synonym.

It's a little more complicated as far as how I treat seeing a character and remembering the meaning. If it is a 2+ character word, with a very specific meaning, I count it wrong if I don't remember it. But if it is a single character that only tends to be part of other words (and therefore could have many seemingly unrelated meanings), then I am not always so harsh.

I'd rate myself strictly, even if I feel after it's something that randomly "slipped" my memory.

For this scenario, I leave it as it is which means I have "learned" a word. No wonder why my word definition retention is the worst ever amongst, I guess, every other Skritter user, like 65% or so. I fear that if I got the word wrong, even though I know how to write it, it would affect the statistics of the associated characters.

I have recently given up trying to learn HSK 5 because my word definition retention was so poor. I am now doing ChinesePod topics that I have previously visited and also a book of commonly used characters.

If I make ten mistakes in a day, I go to bed without supper.

I use the "soso" option quite a lot and wait if I can remember the word next time....
