Go back more than one character/word?

Kevin Gao   June 7th, 2013 8:01a.m.

I love Skritter and have been using it extensively for the last 3 months.

I can't for the life of me figure out how to go back more than one character/word (pressing the back/left arrow to review the previous word is fine, but sometimes I'd like to go back and review the word before that).

I'm assuming this is on purpose? Curious to know the rationale, or if I'm missing a feature/setting that would allow me to go back and see up to say, 5 previously written/tested words.

Amazing product, keep up the good work guys!

Kevin

I assume this is to save memory. I think it could be extended to 2-3 as you can skip through a couple too fast but I wouldn't think there would be a time i want to go further back.

Only being able to go backwards two prompts is intentional, yeah. (It used to be that it allowed for more on the web version).

It's a bit of a shame as I also often find myself trying to go back more than 2 prompts, but would hasten to add that I only see it as a minor issue and this awesome app has completely transformed my Chinese learning over the past year!

It's to save memory (for the app) and to make it so that reviews are saved more quickly (for the app and the site). Otherwise you might lose more of the previous reviews if you left the app and it later crashed, or they wouldn't be synced until the next time you studied.

Got it. It's an awesome app, guys. Can't live without it now. It's pretty much the highlight of a blog post I wrote on learning Chinese:

Would be sweet in the future to see sentences added for each character, so we can see the words in their proper context(s), but again, small nit. You've got a fan.

Check the App Store in a week or two. ;)

Yeah, I've had a few instances like that where the app freezes whenever I unlock my iPod touch after it goes into sleep mode. At least it appears to be frozen so my taps are doing nothing, but after a few seconds they are all recognized and suddenly I'm 1, 2 or even 3 words ahead and then I can't go back to the word I didn't really mean to mark as correct. It doesn't happen very often though thankfully, but still very annoying when it does.

I think, to be quite honest, this is a simplification that makes the app more robust and reliable. It is obviously theoretically possible to allow this feature, but the current design is likely to be simpler to build and test.

As for seeing words the context of sentences, I think it would also be useful to see in which of my words a given character appears. That's probably a feature that will have to wait for my own flashcard system if I ever get around to building it...
