New Practical Chinese Reader

steacy   September 16th, 2011 2:38a.m.

Anyone here knows where to buy NPCR? I found a website: http://www.chinazest.com. The books there look great, but it is located in China. Anyone knows other websites to sell Chinese textbook?

SkritterJake   September 16th, 2011 3:10a.m.

There are a ton on Amazon, but they seem to be the old additions.

Is there some reason for selecting this text book? I only ask because I used the 5th book a while back and didn't find it all that great. I think there are a few other options out there, depending on your level, that might work a bit better.

You can buy the textbooks on Amazon.com at discounted prices, for instance:
http://www.amazon.com/New-Practical-Chinese-Reader-Textbook/dp/7561910401/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1316155644&sr=1-2

The workbooks for this series are excellent as well.

The audio CD's for the textbook and workbook are a must, but the videos produced for the series are really great, and if the textbook edition you find doesn't include the DVD, you can download the movies (legally :) at the "United Nations Chinese Programme" web site:
http://www.unclp.org/video/textbook_video.html

They may be harder to track down, but NPCR is available in many languages other than English: Russian and Thai are two that I've seen.

I myself worked through the first four books and their corresponding workbooks.

@SkritterJake,

I started with the 5th book and wouldn't recommend it either. But books 1-4 are great. Integrated Chinese, which covers much same material, might be a little better, however. One reason for using NPCR is it's low cost and high availability in China - if you're outside of China, that may not be much of an advantage.

can also buy direct from the publisher
http://www.blcup.com/en/index.asp

The shipping is about the same or more than the books depending where you are

StEskil   September 16th, 2011 3:45a.m.

I bought several items of NPCR from www.blcup.com with no problem. The shipping added a lot to the cheap prices, but they were still cheaper than from Amazon, not saying nothing what Book 1 cost in Helsinki. I like having a lot of material, use it or not, and NPCR is my favorite.

SkritterJake   September 16th, 2011 4:59a.m.

I think that I ran into the problem of starting the material too late. At of people who used the earlier books really enjoyed them. However, for a more advanced level I would highly recommend Anything Goes (無所不談), which uses a lot of authentic material that has been edited down for educational purposes.

I've brought a few books from blucup, came out about 1/3 the local cost of buying them here in Sydney but
the shipping was the same as the books.

Couple of the the npcr books , few of the Great Wall Chinese and Meeting in China Practical Chinese.
For a course last year and first half of this year.

DingYun, GuBo and Palanca are gone. The son of DingYun and Gubo and a bunch of new characters are now in the book.

Yup

Its Ding Libo , Lin Na , Ma Dawei,Song Hua,Wang Xiaoyun,Lu Yuping , Chen laoshi, Zhang jiaoshou , Yang laoshi

and the videos are fairly terrible especially the acting (and sound quality even on the dvd's)

can find the videos online
http://unclp.org/oneword/xin1/1-1.htm

but that link only seems to work in internet explorer

another link
http://www.hanyu.com.cn/oldedition/en/htm_newlesson/mulu.htm

turns out it links to the same videos on unclp.org

There are some on youtube but the quality is worse

The videos have their weak points, but I must say that I have a fondness for them! And while the dialogue recording on the CD's have much crisper sound, the DVD videos are better in other measures.
