JLPT List Questions

xiaobill   September 29th, 2011 11:30a.m.

Hi. I started using Scritter a month ago and I find I'm finally remember all the kanji I long forgotten when I studied in Japan. I was wondering how the lists are broken up on here.

Based on the number of words I see in each list, there is no overlap. If I'm studying for 2kyu, it assumes I know everything for 3kyu and 4kyu, right? I'm thinking I should add 3kyu and 4kyu to my lists to make everything complete.

I'm not particular studying for JLPT, just trying to get back to my old level when I was Japan (and beyond). I noticed majority of the users here are studying Chinese, but any suggestions for Japanese would be helpful.

Yes, if you want to be complete, you'll want to add levels 3 and 4 as well as 2.

And don't be concerned about overlap. Skritter manages words between lists, so you never study the same word more often than you should, even if it's in multiple lists that you're studying.

Japanese Skritter started up after the Chinese version, and it's kind of been playing catch up ever since, but they're mostly equivalent in terms of features. Once I overhaul the sentence system to link up with Tatoeba, they'll be pretty much the same, though it would be good to add some additional features specific to Japanese, such as some sort of kana practice. If you have any requests for how to make the Japanese side better, let me know!

Thanks. I went ahead and added the 3 and 4 kyu kanji to my lists. The only problem I have with Scritter is that sometimes I write stuff too fast and it'll occasionally hang. Occasionally I have to refresh it. This mainly happens with characters with low stroke counts or simple vocab where I "know it" already.

The only thing that I see missing (and I'm not sure if it's because I'm studying for JLPT lists), is that there are no example sentences for vocab. Sure, I can go to jisho.org to look up examples for new words, but it would be nice if there was one or two example sentences for each vocab (which I imagine would be time consuming to implement). Just throwing it out there.

It hangs? Do you mean it freezes completely, or does it stop momentarily and then resume? If it's the former, then perhaps it's a bug. If it's the latter, it might be something going on in the background on your computer, like garbage collection, or simply too much going on. Or is it responsive, but it seems to get stuck loading, with the three flashing dots in the upper left corner? If that's the case then it might be taking a while for it to find words to add or study for some reason.

Yep, the example sentences will be coming in the Tatoeba integration. I'm hoping to do that in the not too distant future, because, yeah that would be very helpful, for both Japanese and Chinese. And it would be great to support that project.

Yeah, it stops momentarily then resumes (although sometimes I go ahead and press F5 because of my impatience, heh). There have been no flashing dots in the corner, so it might be a bug. Outside of having about five to ten tabs open in Chrome, there isn't much running in the background of my PC (although it might be time to msconfig to make sure there isn't anything unnecessary running).

Keep up the great work for this site! Seeing the numbers go up as I review all my forgotten kanji has given me encouragement that I can one day say I know Japanese instead of saying I "studied" it. Heh. :)

xiaobill, if you can make a screencast for me (there are many easy-to-use screencasting programs), I can take a look. Press Ctrl+Alt+F to turn on the framerate display, too, and see what that's telling you when it freezes.

I haven't gotten problems since I posted this. Everything has been working great.

Right now, I have 1-4 kyu lists in my study list. 4kyu is 100%, working through 3kyu now. Once I get 80% on 3kyu, I'll let 2kyu join the party, then the same method for 1kyu. This is so useful! I think I learned more in the past three months then I did in my year studying abroad in Japan (for writing and reading! NOT for speaking, lol).
