IOS app bug

Roland   June 15th, 2012 9:30p.m.

Obviously, there is a (design) bug, the IOS app doesn't update changed definitions. Yesterday, I corrected / translated again some definitions, but I won't see them on my IPad. I did the change via the web-app on my laptop, then accepted it in Baller, however, the IOS app is unaware of this change. It seems, that only changes made on the IPad/IPhone itself, will be recognized.
This is not only a problem for me, but for everyone. How is the individual db on an IPhone / IPad updated, if the definition of a item changes? I am using Skritter now on various devices, a few PC's at home / work (no problem, as it is the web app) plus an IPad plus an IPhone. So I think, it's not a malfunction of the code, but a missing part in the design.

Further info: as long as the changed definition is still under custom definition, it is shown correctly, even if I did the change from my PC. In the moment, when I accept this change in Baller and it is deleted from my custom definition list, the old standard definition is shown (local db is not updated, when changes occur on the central db).

Try manually sinking your lists from inside the app. Go to settings-> account then at the bottom there is a button that says "status". Hit that and let it sink.

Another (small) bug on formatting: I have a two-character word with one character being a multiple-reading character. If I go to details of this word, then this character is still shown in the old formatting with the comma, not with the line break, if I then hit the details for this character, it is shown correctly with the line break. Nothing big, but I'm always watching out for non-corrected, multi-reading characters.

Roland   June 15th, 2012 11:12p.m.

Another one: a changed definition (from my IPad) as shared correction is correctly shown under my customs definitions (with shared box ticked correctly), however, it's not shown in Baller. Have a look at: 蕴藏

Roland   June 16th, 2012 5:07a.m.

SGRuixue, I think, it doesn't help either, it still doesn't show items, which I've changed, e.g. the item: 遏止, I've added a German translation yesterday, 19:52, it still shows me the English definition and the data sync said for items "match", based on the level of 2 days ago, June 14th. Sorry, just now, when I re-opened the app, the German definition was shown.
Furthermore, I think, such pull mechanism wouldn't be the right way. How could a user know, that definitions have changed (if it doesn't come from him/herself). I think, it should be a push mechanism. I also don't like the 1 - 2 day delay thing, because I do most corrections when a new item is added. This item comes up quite often during the first and second day.
I am using an IPad as well as an IPhone and I have more than 40.000 study items (more than 10.000 definitions). It would make no sense for me to do a manual data check on both devices almost every day (I am currently doing changes almost every day), only because I had 10 or 20 changes. Imagine, that a lot of users would do that also, the server might be pretty busy during this time.

Now I have done 10 corrections this afternoon, however, Baller only shows me 2. Scott, you can find them under my custom definitions.
Nevertheless, I love this app and during these days, my study time went up to the level "addicted".

Roland   June 16th, 2012 6:48a.m.

I've finished now for today: 19 corrections, only 2 in baller.

paddy665   June 16th, 2012 9:02a.m.

What is baller?

nick   June 17th, 2012 2:12p.m.

It's a performance issue: we can't feasibly push the updated vocab changes out as soon as they're made, but instead have to aggregate them into daily change reports which the client pulls. The custom definitions are synced immediately, so it should mostly be a delay in getting official definition changes--not as big an issue for most users, but a pain for ballers, it's true.

I am not sure why the other direction would not be working immediately: every time you sync the app (which happens often while using it), any custom definitions and corrections made should be sent to the baller without delay.

Roland   June 17th, 2012 9:29p.m.

I've made almost 60 corrections during the weekend, only 3 are shown in Baller, although all are marked as shared.
How are the daily change reports being synced, is it done automatically by the client are is it only done via the status check? If the status shows a mismatch, how is it resolved? My statistic shows a mismatch, do I have to erase all data and re-load it to resolve it?
Now I am going back to the web app and don't use the ios app, therefore, you might see now some corrections done properly.

scott   June 18th, 2012 6:26p.m.

I tweaked how we show definitions in the backside of the card, so it doesn't show commas there, but rather forward slashes like we have on the site for when definitions need to be as compact as possible. This will go out with the next update.

The definitions show up in the baller, but not the right baller. The source language isn't setting the source lang properly, so your example is in the Russian baller. I've fixed it but it will be a bit before I can upload the fix, so make corrections on the site, not the app, for now. Once it's totally fixed I'll switch all your missing definitions to be in the German baller and I'll let you know.

You do bring up a unique situation, Roland, where someone enters in a new definition, it is accepted, and the custom definition is cleared (so the person gets the official definition from then on) but there's a period of time between when that user gets their custom definition removed and before they get the update to the vocab with the new definition, when it seems like it disappeared. I'll tweak that so it doesn't happen, so that for that particular word, the person gets the latest update for the vocab info.

Daily reports are synced in the background, to have as little a footprint as possible. Reports of all the words that have changed go out to clients automatically each day, and the client uses those reports to check against what it has, then in subsequent syncs, it fetches updates for those particular words. It's not done as quickly as possible, but it does happen automatically, and typically within a day from the changes. So for most cases, except for this one you mention which I'll fix, it works fine.

This part of the view about matching is something different and unrelated to vocab updates. That's just to see if the data that is unique to your account is accurate and the same between the server and the app. It's only a diagnostic tool; using it has absolutely no side-effects. It's to help identify when something goes wrong with the syncing between client and server so Nick and I can then fix it. The only way to fix it for you though is to clear your data and download everything anew. Make sure that you actually did sync everything though. Go to the study view and then back to the home screen, make sure it says 'synced' on the study button, then do the diagnostic once more. What rows show mismatch for you?

Roland   June 18th, 2012 11:45p.m.

Scott, thanks a lot. So for the time being, I will use the web-app, when making corrections.
As for the status: it says, progress mismatch (all other match).
Might be, it's related to another phenomena reported in another blog:
Yesterday evening, when working on the IPad, I left the app at 100 items due (I left via the main page, so that it is synced). Then I looked at the web-app, it said more than 200 items due, I opened the app on the IPhone and it said 6 items due (again, went via main page for syncing). As I went out, I switched off the wifi.
This morning, the web-app said 680 items due, the IPhone (after switching on the wifi) still said 6 items due, although the main page showed synced, and the IPad had another number. After I switched off and on the IPhone as well as the IPad, all 3 devices said almost the same number (only a difference of 2 or 3 items).
Now I was running the status check again on the IPhone and it says for all categories match (I didn't do any reviews in the meantime). So it seems, that there is a difference between the sync, when the app is re-started, and the ongoing sync.

Antimacassar   July 20th, 2012 7:52a.m.

I've noticed a problem with changed definitions whilst using the app that might be related to this issue.

I study both 繁体 and 简体 and I often manually change the definition from an English to a Chinese one. With characters that are the same in both forms I've had no problems as with the 简体 definitions that I changed. However, with many (maybe all?!)of the new 繁体 definitions that I have used on the app it doesn't seem to update.

I have stared a few and the weird thing is that when I look at them on the web page the definition is still in English, but when I click on the character and look in the information window (don't know the right word for this sorry) the definition is in Chinese.

Seems like some kind of bug to me, and, like I say, it's only since I have been using the app that I have noticed it.

scott   July 20th, 2012 6:33p.m.

That's a fixed bug. It'll go out in the next release.

Antimacassar   September 17th, 2012 4:53p.m.

Although the problem with edited definitions seems much better the bug is still there, at least for a few words (I have one in my starred words as an example).

Also sometimes edited definitions show up as super-small.
