Number of Cards to be reviewed.

jll90   July 2nd, 2012 10:04p.m.

Sorry if this is a little bit repetitive, but I still do not understand why the number of cards to be reviewed may decrease from 430 to even 315 in some instances. Is the app making me skip a lot of reviews? I'm using an ipad by the way.

Thank you

nick   July 3rd, 2012 7:17p.m.

It would be a trick for it to decrease from 430 to 315 in one go unless it had just synced some reviews you did in another place--could that be the case?

It normally can decrease by many items at a time because you can review multiple items in one prompt, and then other items which are closely related to those items can get spaced back a little bit so that you don't see them right away (ruining the prompt). But probably that wouldn't account for a jump of 115.

Number of Cards   July 4th, 2012 4:56a.m.

I'm really serious, I've seen it go down by hundreds, and I've been using only one device.

jll90   July 4th, 2012 1:31p.m.

After the jumps all the data in the server gets overwritten, so i do not have reviews left. . I uninstalled and reinstalled the app. I still have the same problem. I don't know what to do.

Roland   July 4th, 2012 9:23p.m.

I've seen this quite often on the web-app (I don't use Beta). First the items due are climbing up by hundreds and then falling down all by the sudden to the real number. I can even force this by stopping reviewing for a few minutes, then, when reviewing the next few items, it falls down.

DependableSkeleton   July 5th, 2012 8:16a.m.

I have also seen the number of items decrease by many dozens at a time. Sometimes even by a hundred or so. I exclusively use the app on the iPad.

DependableSkeleton   July 5th, 2012 8:45a.m.

Does "closely related" include words which share a character? If so, that may explain why I get many dozens of items decreasing suddenly. I am currently studying a vocab list which is alphabetical and so I often have many words which all start with the same character. For example, I just finished adding 18 consecutive words which start with 發. With 3 types of prompts (for me) for each word, that could be a lot of rescheduling.

scott   July 5th, 2012 5:03p.m.

It should only space items for the same word (definition, tone, reading of a word if you're studying the writing, for example), and items for characters contained in the word (except for definition parts, since those are far enough away from the word meaning not to affect reviews).

It might also be that the app doesn't have all the info it needs on the words you're studying. Could you try clearing your data and downloading it again, Dependable Skeleton, and see if the issue remains?

jll90   July 6th, 2012 2:04a.m.

I've cleaned all of the data. The issue remains. Today, I saw my reviews go down from 500 to about 50 something.

DependableSkeleton   July 6th, 2012 12:52p.m.

I cleaned my data last night. This morning, after it had synced and updated the number to due, it said 195. After I did one prompt, it ran down to 102.

After that, though, I only noticed decreases by the usual 2 or 3 for each prompt (which is still counterintuitive.) Fixing things may be more trouble than it's worth, but I feel like the app should automatically figure out that my list of reviews includes items which will reschedule other items in the list.

The number to items due will only ever feel natural to me if it *only* decreases by 1 for each word that it shows me. (Of course, the increases will depend on when words actually become due.)

I'm making a copy of your account jll90 to see if I can reproduce the problem. Such a jump really shouldn't happen, or if it does, there should be some sort of indication as to why.

@Dependable Skeleton: That's one of those things we wanted to do but opted to launch sooner rather than make better beforehand. It's on my list of things to do with the app, to make it pretty much always go down one at a time.

jll90   July 6th, 2012 9:07p.m.

Ok, I hope you guys can figure it out. Thanks for the help.

DependableSkeleton   July 7th, 2012 7:25a.m.

@scott: Great!

jll90   July 10th, 2012 8:07p.m.

Were you able to figure anything out?

scott   July 11th, 2012 6:57p.m.

Not yet. Only had a couple hours available for iOS bug fixing since this was reported. Will keep you posted!

scott   July 16th, 2012 7:10p.m.

Okay I've found a few bugs, which all happen sometimes and mainly with traditional word study, and which build up over time, which is why they weren't easy to find. When the next release comes out, clear your data and download it anew.

jll90   July 17th, 2012 7:22a.m.

Ok, would you suggest I switch to simplified for the moment being?

DependableSkeleton   July 17th, 2012 9:47a.m.

Great! Thanks a lot!

scott   July 18th, 2012 4:35p.m.

To properly study those items that are skipped, you'll need to use the website. Other than that, the best thing to do is leave your settings as they are and wait for the next update.

DependableSkeleton   August 10th, 2012 10:48a.m.

How far apart are items for the same word separated? Recently I've noticed that I'm getting different parts (eg. definition and tone) for the same word within a few minutes of each other.

Also, before I would occasionally be unable to advance while I waited for the "items due" to finish running down during its huge jumps. Recently, I've had trouble advancing even when my "items due" is at zero. Presumably the app is madly rescheduling items in the background. Sometimes I have to wait for 10-20 seconds before I can advance to the next card.

scott   August 10th, 2012 1:58p.m.

It's an algorithm that depends on the interval for the item being spaced. It's one fifth of the current interval length, with a minimum of at least ten minutes, but if you're studying items ahead of time then they'll show up sooner than their scheduled time. Does this explain what you're seeing? If not could you give an example word? Then I can look closer at the scheduling.

I'll try and get this iOS update out soon so these issues with the rescheduling become a thing of the past.

DependableSkeleton   August 10th, 2012 2:49p.m.

Yes, that explains it. I've recently worked my way down to studying words when they're 89% due. This coincides with my starting to notice items from the same word coming up near each other.
