Word count (feature request)

Bibi011   November 13th, 2013 3:04p.m.

Would it be hard to add the total number of words and individual characters student has learned on the progress page? I'm sure your app keeps track of that but it does not show the count anywhere. Students normally add different lists to their study so it's hard to figure out this number. It would be encouraging to watch the count grow :)

If you click the "totals" button in the upper right hand corner of http://www.skritter.com/progress, it shows the count for each area studied. If on the iOS app you can click the "year" tab and get a graph view of the totals for each as well.

Yes, but don't some words overlap, i.e. they are counted in each list where they appear? It is not really the total of all the words I know. Also it does not count characters separately from words.

You can export your Skritter vocab list and use this little script to count the words and characters. It'll also do stuff like show how many HSK words you know, and suggest high frequency words that you don't know yet:

I believe it doesn't count overlapped words, if one word or character repeats in 10 lists it would only count it once.
And the characters are counted separtely from words.

I apologize for not making it clear that I was talking about iOS app, not the web site. I do not really use the web site. Although even there there are no totals across years. Of course it is not a big deal, I just thought it would be neat to have it. Thanks for the tip about python, Alan, that is useful!

Under year's progress on the iOS app, mine shows as "character writings" and "word writings". Isn't this what you're looking for?

But it seems progress in the iOS app only shows graphs, it doesn't show the exact number.

Alan,

Thanks for creating the HSK counter on http://hskhsk.pythonanywhere.com/hanzi - very helpful, something I've been looking for for a while.
